AlfaType is a type-design practice established in 2006 by Joseph Miceli. Developing an original catalogue of fonts as well as commissioned typefaces for print and screen.

We believe in fair pricing that reflects the scale and context of each client’s use. Font licenses are offered based on company size, intended usage (print, web, app, etc.), and our standard license duration is 5 years. A tiered system allows students, independent designers, small studios and large organizations alike to access high-quality typefaces at appropriate rates.

For custom projects or specific licensing needs—such as broadcasting, embedding, or multi-brand usage—we’re happy to provide tailored solutions.

The foundry is one of several activities in the graphic design, printing and publishing fields that co-exist in the same studio space. Although AlfaType is a very small scale operation, we do occasionally take on assistants and interns. If you would like to enquire about an internship, discuss publishing your project with AlfaType, or propose any other kind of collaboration, write to us. Serious submissions only please!

We do accept commissions for the creation of custom typefaces, please write us for more information. Our typefaces can also be configured or expanded into custom fonts, a service aimed at adding distinctiveness to one of our existing products to match the voice of your brand. Starting with one of the typefaces in our catalogue, we work with you to modify it formally and functionally, then we finalise the font files and deliver it along with a custom licence.

Our trial policy is simple: we provide friends, students, designers, etc. with fully functional fonts free of charge, on agreement that if you end up using them on commercial projects (as part of a book, magazine, website, or brand, etc) you will budget the cost of the appropriate licenses directly to the client. This way we hope to end up in more of your projects! Sound fair?

We are always keen to associate AlfaType with worthy projects and initiatives if our politics are in line. Desktop End User License Agreement (EULA)

This is a legal agreement between you and AlfaType (“AlfaType”). Subject to the terms and conditions hereof and upon payment of the license fee AlfaType grants you a non-exclusive, non-assignable, non-transferable right to use the AlfaType font software (“font software”). This is not an agreement for sale of the font software or any portion or copy of it.

Definition

The term “font software” is referred to the computer program which contains digitally encoded scaleable outline font data and includes any related documentation, updates, permitted modifications and permitted copies of the font software licensed to you by AlfaType. You agree that AlfaType and/or its suppliers own all rights to the font software and its structure, selection, organization and code, including copyrights, patents, design and trademark rights. In addition, you agree that the code and structure of the font software constitute and contain valuable trade secrets owned by AlfaType and/or its suppliers. The font software is protected by International Copyrights Laws. This means that by buying the licence you only buy the right to use the fonts. The fonts themselves remain the exclusive property of AlfaType Fonts.

Standard User License

You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. However, you may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All permitted copies you make must contain the exact copyright, trademark and other proprietary notices that appear on and/or in the font software.

Modifications

You agree that you will not modify, add new functionalities, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, decrypt, disassemble nor create derivative works of the font software without AlfaType’s prior, express written consent. “Derivative work” is referred to any font software which is derived or based upon the hereto licensed font software binary data (or any portion of it). This means you may not modify the fonts in any way.

Embedding

Embedding of the font software into electronic documents or internet pages is only permitted in a secured read-only mode. Licensee must ensure that recipients of electronic documents or internet pages cannot extract the font software from such documents or use the embedded font software for editing purposes or for the creation of new documents. This means you may not modify the fonts in any way.

Transfer/Service Bureau/Printer

You may not sell, lend, otherwise transfer or sublicense the font software to any third party without AlfaType’s prior written consent. You may send a copy of the font software, or any portion of the font software, used in your documents to a commercial printer or service bureau to enable the editing or printing of your documents, provided that such commercial printer or service bureau has purchased a valid license to use the font software. This means that to output your documents you can either send non-editable PDF files, or your printer/service bureau/designer must get a separate licence.

Other Restrictions
You agree that you may not use the font software or portion of it (unless you obtain additional licensing) in the following cases:

1. as part of a copyrighted logo or trademark.
2. as part of electronic templates such as website design templates and presentation templates which an individual can use to create electronic greeting cards, business cards, e-business cards, or any other electronic or printed matter.
3. as part of a mobile application which will be distributed to more than five thousand (5000) end users over a twelve (12) month period.
4. as part of a desktop computer application which allows the generation of static/scalable images, PDFs, documents such as word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
5. for goods such as clothing or any other form of merchandising, for which the font software becomes one of the main elements of the product.
6. as part of a website hosted on one or more web servers, using web font technologies such as @font-face, sIFR, Cufón or Typeface.js.
7. as part of an electronic publication such as eBook, eMagazine, eNewspaper or interactive PDF.
8. as part of broadcasting video or film. Broadcast and film usage refers to the use of the font software in titling, credits or other dynamic text for any onscreen broadcast via television, video or motion picture.

Termination

The license granted hereunder shall automatically terminate, if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions hereof. Upon termination of this font software License Agreement, you agree to either return or to destroy and refrain from using the font software, the media, copies and/or any modified or merged portions thereof.

Limited Warranty

For a period of 90 days after delivery, AlfaType warrants that the font software will perform as outlined in the user documentation in effect at the time of the commencement of this license. AlfaType will undertake reasonable commercial efforts to correct substantial malfunctions occurring during this warranty period provided that such malfunctions are reproducible, your product is properly registered, and you give immediate notice in writing and sufficient detail of such malfunctions to AlfaType. ALFATYPE’S SOLE LIABILITY AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WITH RESPECT TO BREACH OF THE FOREGOING LIMITED WARRANTY WILL BE LIMITED TO ERROR CORRECTION OR PRODUCT REPLACEMENT. Such corrections generally will be incorporated into new revisions of the font software, or until the release of such new revisions into temporary versions, at AlfaType’s discretion.

EXCEPT FOR THE ABOVE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY, THE FONT SOFTWARE IS HEREUNDER LICENSED “AS IS”, AND ALFATYPE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE REGARDING THE FONT SOFTWARE. ALFATYPE SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR ARISING FROM A COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.

The font software is nonreturnable and nonrefundable.

Limitation of Liability

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THIS AGREEMENT OR THE USE OF THE FONT SOFTWARE, HOWEVER CAUSED, (WHETHER ARISING UNDER A THEORY OF CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), OR OTHERWISE), INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR BUSINESS INFORMATION, OR COSTS OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE FONT SOFTWARE EVEN IF NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE’S LIABILITY EXCEED THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THE FONT SOFTWARE.

Third Parties

You agree to inform your employees or any other person having access to the font software and copies thereof, of the terms and conditions of this font software License Agreement and to ensure that they shall strictly abide by these terms and conditions.

General. Entire Agreement

This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the subject matter of this Agreement and supersedes all prior and contemporaneous written and oral agreements between the parties regarding the subject matter of this Agreement. No waiver or modification of this Agreement will be binding upon either party unless made in writing and signed by a duly authorized representative of such party and no failure or delay in enforcing any right will be deemed a waiver.

Severability

If any provision of this Agreement is found to be illegal or unenforceable, the other provisions shall remain effective and enforceable to the greatest extent permitted by law.

Assignability

Except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, you may not sell, assign or delegate any rights or obligations under this Agreement. Any attempted assignment in violation of this Agreement shall be void and without effect.

Governing Law

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Italy. All disputes related to this Agreement shall be heard in the Courts of Italy. Both you and AlfaType agree to the personal jurisdiction and venue of these courts in any action related to the Agreement. This Agreement will not be governed by the conflict of law rules of any jurisdiction or by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.

Breach of Agreement

In the event of any breach of this agreement by you, you agree to be responsible for the reasonable legal fees of AlfaType and its licensors, in the event that AlfaType or its licensors are required to enforce their rights by commencing an action under these provisions.

Changes to the Terms of Use

AlfaType reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of the terms of use of this EULA, at any time. It is your responsibility to check the terms of use periodically for changes. Your use of the font software will be subject to the most recent version of these terms of use at the time of such use.

AlfaType and the AlfaType logo are registered trademarks.

Web End User License Agreement
This is a legal agreement between you and AlfaType (hereinafter “AlfaType”). Subject to the terms and conditions hereof and upon payment of the license fee AlfaType grants you a non-exclusive, non-assignable, non-transferable right to use the AlfaType font software (“font software”) which accompanies this license or you have ordered online. This is not an agreement for sale of the font software or any portion or copy of it.

Definition
The term “webfont” is referred to the font software which has been created, optimized, translated or otherwise modified for styling HTML web pages and specifically for the viewing of text on a website using the @font-face declaration.

Grant of License
The licensed webfont(s) may be hosted on one (1) domain only with a maximum five (5) sub-domains. “Domain” is the host name of a website’s home page. You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. However, you may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All permitted copies you make must contain the exact copyright, trademark and other proprietary notices that appear on and/or in the font software.

Restriction of Use
The licensed webfont(s) are provided for use via the CSS @font-face technology for websites only. Unless you obtain additional licensing, you agree that:

1. you may not use conversion or editing tools on the Licensed Webfont(s).
2. you may not use the webfonts with technologies such as sIFR, Cufón or Typeface.js.
3. you may not use the webfonts as part of interactive web application where users can select any licensed webfont(s) and enter or edit text using the specific webfont(s).
4. you may not link to, nor put online, any version of the font not supplied with the webfont package
5. you may not use the licensed webfont(s) on a desktop or laptop computer with prepress or applications other than as expressly permitted herein.
6. you may not link and/or embed the webfonts to smartphone apps, video games or electronic publications such as eBook, eMagazine, eNewspaper or interactive PDF.

Font Software protection
You agree to apply reasonable measures to prevent unlicensed third-parties from hotlinking and direct downloading of the webfonts unrelated to the process of styling text for the licensed domain.

Modifications
You agree that you will not modify, add new functionalities, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, decrypt, disassemble nor create derivative works of the font software without AlfaType’s prior written consent. “Derivative work” is referred to any font software which is derived or based upon the hereto licensed font software binary data (or any portion of it).

Embedding
Embedding of the webfont(s) in any documents, software, applications or devices other than your website, is not permitted.

Transfer of License

Logotype License
In many cases we do not ask for additional license fees for logotype usage. As long as you have purchased a standard license, you don’t have to buy additional license if you (licensee) are delivering ‘non-editable’ files to a third party. If, instead, the third party needs to edit text or in any way work with the fonts themselves, they will need their own license as well. In other cases you may have to purchase an additional license if the font is used as a wordmark for companies and corporations of a certain size. Additionally, our standard EULA clearly states that you may not use the font software or portion of it as part of a copyrighted logo or trademark unless you obtain additional licensing. Please provide thorough details in order to determine the exact cost.

Mobile App End User License Agreement
This is a legal agreement between you and AlfaType (“AlfaType”). Subject to the terms and conditions hereof and upon payment of the license fee AlfaType grants you a non-exclusive, non-assignable, non-transferable right to use the AlfaType font software (“font software”) subject to all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. This is not an agreement for sale of the font software or any portion or copy of it.

Font Software
The font software you selected for purchase, is the property of AlfaType and/or its suppliers. The term “font software” is referred to the computer program which contains digitally encoded scaleable outline font data and includes any related documentation, updates, permitted modifications and permitted copies of the font software licensed to you by AlfaType. You agree that AlfaType and/or its suppliers own all rights to the font software and its structure, selection, organization and code, including copyrights, patents, design and trademark rights. In addition, you agree that the code and structure of the font software constitute and contain valuable trade secrets owned by AlfaType and/or its suppliers. The font software is protected by International Copyrights Laws.

Grant of License
You may embed the Font Software into one (1) mobile application on multiple application platforms such as iOS, Android or Windows in a secure manner and for a period of one (1) year, unless stated otherwise on your invoice. You agree that you will take no action which will have the direct or indirect effect of causing the Font Software to become Publicly Available Software. End users must not be allowed to access and subsequently extract the font software from the app and/or use it outside of the mobile application. You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. However, you may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All permitted copies you make must contain the exact copyright, trademark and other proprietary notices that appear on and/or in the font software. Licensing rights for additional apps and/or years must be acquired at an additional cost.

Other Restrictions
You agree that you may not use the font software or portion of it (unless you obtain additional licensing) in the following cases:

1. as part of a copyrighted logo or trademark.

This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the subject matter of this Agreement and supersedes all prior and contemporaneous written and oral agreements between the parties regarding the subject matter of this Agreement. No waiver or modification of this Agreement will be binding upon either party unless made in writing and signed by a duly authorized representative of such party and no failure or delay in enforcing any right will be deemed a waiver.

Severability
If any provision of this Agreement is found to be illegal or unenforceable, the other provisions shall remain effective and enforceable to the greatest extent permitted by law.

Assignability
Except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, you may not sell, assign or delegate any rights or obligations under this Agreement. Any attempted assignment in violation of this Agreement shall be void and without effect.

Governing Law
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Italy. All disputes related to this Agreement shall be heard in the Court of Law of Italy. Both you and AlfaType agree to the personal jurisdiction and venue of these courts in any action related to the Agreement. This Agreement will not be governed by the conflict of law rules of any jurisdiction or by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.

Breach of Agreement
In the event of any breach of this agreement by you, you agree to be responsible for the reasonable legal fees of AlfaType and its licensors, in the event that AlfaType or its licensors are required to enforce their rights by commencing an action under these provisions.

Changes to the Terms of Use
AlfaType reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of the terms of use of this EULA, at any time. It is your responsibility to check the terms of use periodically for changes. Your use of the font software will be subject to the most recent version of these terms of use at the time of such use.

Broadcasting License
Broadcasting refers to anything related to using our font software for onscreen broadcasting via television, film or video and specifically for dynamic text which is used for titling, credits, etc. Broadcasting is not covered by our standard license. Please contact us for a quote. This is an once-off fee and the cost varies depending on duration and region.

OEM License
Allows pre-installed fonts to be delivered together with the manufacturer’s hardware equipment or software (such as printers, video games, etc). Licensee shall not allow users to extract the fonts from the equipment or use them for any other purpose. Cost varies depending on the number of fonts used and number of produced units. Please provide specific information about your product (including selling price) and the number of produced units for a price quote.

ePublication End User License Agreement
This is a legal agreement between you and AlfaType (“AlfaType”). Subject to the terms and conditions hereof and upon payment of the license fee AlfaType grants you a non-exclusive, non-assignable, non-transferable right to use the AlfaType font software (“font software”) subject to all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. This is not an agreement for sale of the font software or any portion or copy of it.

Font Software
The font software you selected for purchase, is the property of AlfaType and/or its suppliers. The term “font software” is referred to the computer program which contains digitally encoded scaleable outline font data and includes any related documentation, updates, permitted modifications and permitted copies of the font software licensed to you by AlfaType. You agree that AlfaType and/or its suppliers own all rights to the font software and its structure, selection, organization and code, including copyrights, patents, design and trademark rights. In addition, you agree that the code and structure of the font software constitute and contain valuable trade secrets owned by AlfaType and/or its suppliers. The font software is protected by International Copyrights Laws.

Grant of License
You may embed the Font Software into one (1) electronic publication (“ePublication”) such as eBook, eMagazine, eNewspaper or interactive PDF, in a secure manner and for a period of one (1) year, unless stated otherwise on your invoice. You agree that you will take no action which will have the direct or indirect effect of causing the Font Software to become Publicly Available Software. End users must not be allowed to access and subsequently extract the font software from the ePublication and/or use it outside of the ePublication. You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. However, you may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All permitted copies you make must contain the exact copyright, trademark and other proprietary notices that appear on and/or in the font software. Licensing rights for additional ePublications and/or years must be acquired at an additional cost.

Restriction of Use
You may embed the Font Software into one (1) electronic publication (“ePublication”) such as eBook, eMagazine, eNewspaper or interactive PDF, in a secure manner and for a period of one (1) year, unless stated otherwise on your invoice. You agree that you will take no action which will have the direct or indirect effect of causing the Font Software to become Publicly Available Software. End users must not be allowed to access and subsequently extract the font software from the ePublication and/or use it outside of the ePublication. You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. However, you may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All permitted copies you make must contain the exact copyright, trademark and other proprietary notices that appear on and/or in the font software. Licensing rights for additional ePublications and/or years must be acquired at an additional cost.

Other Restrictions
You agree that you may not use the font software or portion of it (unless you obtain additional licensing) in the following cases:

1. as part of a copyrighted logo or trademark.
2. as part of electronic templates such as website design templates and presentation templates which an individual can use to create electronic greeting cards, business cards, e-business cards, or any other electronic or printed matter.
3. as part of a mobile application which will be distributed to more than five thousand (5000) end users over a twelve (12) month period.
4. as part of a desktop computer application which allows the generation of static/scalable images, PDFs, documents such as word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
5. for goods such as clothing or any other form of merchandising, for which the font software becomes one of the main elements of the product.
6. as part of a website hosted on one or more web servers, using web font technologies such as @font-face, sIFR, Cufón or Typeface.js.
7. as part of an electronic publication such as eBook, eMagazine, eNewspaper or interactive PDF.
8. as part of broadcasting video or film. Broadcast and film usage refers to the use of the font software in titling, credits or other dynamic text for any onscreen broadcast via television, video or motion picture.

Embedding
Embedding of the font software in any documents, software, applications or devices other than the licensed ePublication is not permitted.

Modifications
You agree that you will not modify, add new functionalities, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, decrypt, disassemble nor create derivative works of the font software without AlfaType’s prior, express written consent. “Derivative work” is referred to any font software which is derived or based upon the hereto licensed font software binary data (or any portion of it).

Transfer of License
You may not sell, lend, otherwise transfer or sublicense the font software to any third party without AlfaType’s prior written consent.

Termination
The license granted hereunder shall automatically terminate, if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions hereof. Upon termination of this font software License Agreement, you agree to either return or to destroy and refrain from using the font software, the media, copies and/or any modified or merged portions thereof.

Limited Warranty
For a period of 90 days after delivery, AlfaType warrants that the font software will perform as outlined in the user documentation in effect at the time of the commencement of this license. AlfaType will undertake reasonable commercial efforts to correct substantial malfunctions occurring during this warranty period provided that such malfunctions are reproducible, your product is properly registered, and you give immediate notice in writing and sufficient detail of such malfunctions to AlfaType. ALFATYPE’S SOLE LIABILITY AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WITH RESPECT TO BREACH OF THE FOREGOING LIMITED WARRANTY WILL BE LIMITED TO ERROR CORRECTION OR PRODUCT REPLACEMENT. Such corrections generally will be incorporated into new revisions of the font software, or until the release of such new revisions into temporary versions, at AlfaType’s discretion.

EXCEPT FOR THE ABOVE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY, THE FONT SOFTWARE IS HEREUNDER LICENSED “AS IS”, AND ALFATYPE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE REGARDING THE FONT SOFTWARE. ALFATYPE SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR ARISING FROM A COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.

The font software is nonreturnable and nonrefundable.

Limitation of Liability
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THIS AGREEMENT OR THE USE OF THE FONT SOFTWARE, HOWEVER CAUSED, (WHETHER ARISING UNDER A THEORY OF CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), OR OTHERWISE), INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR BUSINESS INFORMATION, OR COSTS OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE FONT SOFTWARE EVEN IF NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE’S LIABILITY EXCEED THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THE FONT SOFTWARE.

Third Parties
You agree to inform your employees or any other person having access to the font software and copies thereof, of the terms and conditions of this font software License Agreement and to ensure that they shall strictly abide by these terms and conditions.

General. Entire Agreement
