About the Foundry
AlfaType is a type-design practice established in 2006 by Joseph Miceli. Developing an original catalogue of fonts as well as commissioned typefaces for print and screen.
While AlfaType is mostly a one-man operation, I would like to send a special thank you to all the friends and collaborators who have helped me over the years. You know who you are.

Pricing
We believe in fair pricing that reflects the scale and context of each client’s use. Font licenses are offered based on company size, intended usage (print, web, app, etc.), and our standard license duration is 5 years. A tiered system allows students, independent designers, small studios and large organizations alike to access high-quality typefaces at appropriate rates.
For custom projects or specific licensing needs—such as broadcasting, embedding, or multi-brand usage—we’re happy to provide tailored solutions.

Intern & Collaborations
The foundry is one of several activities in the graphic design, printing and publishing fields that co-exist in the same studio space. Although AlfaType is a very small scale operation, we do occasionally take on assistants and interns. If you would like to enquire about an internship, discuss publishing your project with AlfaType, or propose any other kind of collaboration, write to us. Serious submissions only please!
Custom Fonts
We do accept commissions for the creation of custom typefaces, please write us for more information. Our typefaces can also be configured or expanded into custom fonts, a service aimed at adding distinctiveness to one of our existing products to match the voice of your brand. Starting with one of the typefaces in our catalogue, we work with you to modify it formally and functionally, then we finalise the font files and deliver it along with a custom licence.

Trials Policy & Discounts
Our trial policy is simple: we provide friends, students, designers, etc. with fully functional fonts free of charge, on agreement that if you end up using them on commercial projects (as part of a book, magazine, website, or brand, etc) you will budget the cost of the appropriate licenses directly to the client. This way we hope to end up in more of your projects! Sound fair?
Sponsorships
We are always keen to associate AlfaType with worthy projects and initiatives if our politics are in line. If your non-profit project is interested in a partnership, send us a proposal for consideration. We also have special licensing terms for educational institutions licensing fonts for student use. Please email us for more information.
Payments
All prices are listed in Euro (€). AlfaType fonts are available for purchase only via our website. We use PayPal to process payments including all major credit cards. Please email us if you would like to make a payment via wire transfer.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact us.

Introduction
What you’re buying
Buying a font from AlfaType means buying a license to use it—just like you would for any other piece of software.
How pricing works
We believe licensing should be clear, proportional, and fair. Our pricing model is based on company size, defined by the total employee headcount of the organisation that will be using the typeface in its communications. This is independent of how many people have the font installed locally. Licenses are priced to reflect the scale of benefit the organisation derives from the use of the typeface.
Modular Licenses
Licenses are modular and sold by usage context. At checkout, you can choose the license types that match your needs:
Desktop License
for installing and using the fonts on your computer(s) for print and document production
Web License
for self-hosted use on a single domain via CSS @font-face
App License
for embedding into iOS, Android, or desktop apps
ePub License
for fonts embedded in digital publications (epub, eBooks, etc.)
Broadcasting License
for dynamic onscreen text in video, TV, and film
Social Media License
for use in graphics, motion content, or templates published to social media platforms. Note: this usage is not covered by the Desktop License and requires a separate extension.
Merchandise License
for designs where the typeface is a prominent visual element or embedded on a product
OEM License
for bundling fonts with software or hardware
License Duration
Unless otherwise stated on the invoice, all licenses are valid for a period of five (5) years from the date of purchase, after which renewal may be required for continued use.
Company Size & Subsidiaries
The applicable license tier is determined by the total employee headcount of the organisation using the typeface—not the number of people with the font installed locally. Where the licensee is a subsidiary of a larger corporate group, AlfaType reserves the right to determine the applicable tier based on the headcount of the ultimate parent entity, unless otherwise agreed in writing. The applicable tier is confirmed at time of purchase or, where pricing has been agreed directly with AlfaType, as stated on the invoice.
Third-Party Extension
An optional Third-Party Extension allows external collaborators—such as design studios, agencies, developers, printers, or freelancers—to install and use the fonts solely for the purpose of creating work on behalf of the licensee. The extension does not grant collaborators the right to use the fonts in their own internal or self-initiated work. This extension is non-transferable, tied to the primary license, and expires with it. If this applies to your situation, please get in touch so we can provide the appropriate documentation.
Please note
The checkout on this website is currently being updated to fully reflect our company-size pricing model. Existing tiers shown at checkout (based on workstations, visitors, or devices) are legacy options and may not reflect the correct scope for your organisation. If you are unsure which license or tier applies, please contact us before purchasing. Licenses purchased through the website may be subject to review and adjustment to reflect the correct tier.

Desktop EULA
Desktop End User License Agreement (EULA)
License Scope
The scope of this license is determined by the total employee headcount of the licensee organisation (or its ultimate parent entity in the case of subsidiaries, unless otherwise agreed in writing). The applicable tier is confirmed at time of purchase or, where pricing has been agreed directly with AlfaType, as stated on the invoice. Unless otherwise stated on the invoice, this license is valid for five (5) years from the date of purchase.
Standard User License
You may not duplicate or copy the font software except as needed to use it as expressly permitted by this Agreement. You may make one (1) copy for backup purposes. All copies must retain the original copyright, trademark, and proprietary notices.
Embedding
Embedding of the font software into electronic documents is only permitted in a secured read-only mode. Recipients of such documents must not be able to extract the font software or use it for editing purposes or for the creation of new documents.
Third-Party Use & External Collaborators
You may not sell, lend, transfer, or sublicense the font software to any third party without AlfaType’s prior written consent. You may send non-editable PDF files to printers, service bureaus, or external collaborators without restriction. If an external collaborator needs to install and work directly with the font files on your behalf, a Third-Party Extension must be added to your license. Please contact us to add this extension.
Other Restrictions
Unless you obtain additional licensing, you may not use the font software as part of:
All other terms—including modifications, warranty, limitation of liability, termination, governing law, and changes to terms—are set out in the General Terms.
Web EULA
Web End User License Agreement
Definition
The term “webfont” refers to font software created, optimized, or otherwise modified for styling HTML web pages via the CSS @font-face declaration.
License Scope
The applicable license tier is determined by the total employee headcount of the licensee organisation. Unless otherwise stated on the invoice, this license is valid for five (5) years from the date of purchase.
Grant of License
The licensed webfont(s) may be hosted on one (1) domain only, with a maximum of five (5) sub-domains. You may make one (1) copy of the font software for backup purposes. All copies must retain the original copyright, trademark, and proprietary notices.
Restriction of Use
The licensed webfont(s) are provided for use via CSS @font-face only. Unless you obtain additional licensing, you agree that:
Font Software Protection
You agree to apply reasonable technical measures to prevent unlicensed third parties from hotlinking or directly downloading the webfont files from your server.
Transfer of License
You may not sell, lend, transfer, or sublicense the font software to any third party without AlfaType’s prior written consent. If an external developer needs to access the webfont files to integrate them on the licensed domain, a Third-Party Extension must be added to the license. Please contact us to arrange this.
All other terms—including modifications, warranty, limitation of liability, termination, governing law, and changes to terms—are set out in the General Terms.
Logotype EULA
Logotypes
A standard AlfaType desktop license permits the use of our fonts in logotype and wordmark design. You may create logos, wordmarks, and brand marks using the font software and distribute the resulting artwork in any non-editable format—including outlined vector files, PDFs, or rasterised images—without restriction, and without requiring the recipient to hold their own license.
Permitted under a standard desktop license:
Designing a logo, wordmark, or brand mark using the font; delivering outlined or flattened artwork to clients, printers, or collaborators; applying the resulting logo across print, digital, packaging, signage, and merchandise.
Trademark registration:
If you intend to register a logo or wordmark that prominently incorporates an AlfaType font as a trademark, a dedicated Logotype License is required. This applies regardless of whether the letterforms have been modified. Please contact us with details of the intended mark and the registering entity.
Scale of use:
Where an AlfaType typeface functions as the primary visual identity of a company, the license tier must reflect that company’s headcount. Where the company is a subsidiary of a larger group, AlfaType reserves the right to price the Logotype License at the parent group’s scale, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
For logotype licensing enquiries please contact us at [email protected]
Mobile/Apps EULA
Mobile App End User License Agreement
Grant of License
This license permits the embedding of the font software into one (1) application title across multiple platforms (iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, or similar). Each additional application title requires a separate license. Licensing rights for additional years must be acquired before the expiry of the current term.
License Scope & Pricing
App licenses are priced according to the number of downloads (or monthly active users) of the licensed application. Where verified download or usage data is not yet available—for example, in the case of a new or unreleased application—the license will be priced according to the licensee’s company size (total employee headcount) for an initial term of five (5) years. At the end of this initial term, the license must be renewed and will be repriced based on actual download or usage figures at that time.
For established applications with existing download or usage data, the applicable tier will be determined from the outset based on those figures. Please contact us with your current download or MAU numbers: [email protected]
Security & Embedding Requirements
The font software must be embedded in a secure manner that prevents end users from extracting, copying, or using the font outside of the application. The font software may not be distributed alongside the application’s source code or in any way that allows it to be accessed or used independently.
Restrictions
Unless you obtain additional licensing, this license does not cover: use of the font on a website or via web font technologies (see Web EULA); use in electronic publications (see ePub EULA); use in broadcasting, video, or film (see Broadcasting); use as part of a copyrighted logo or trademark (see Logotype License); or use in merchandise where the typeface is a primary visual element.
All other terms—including modifications, warranty, limitation of liability, termination, governing law, and changes to terms—are set out in the General Terms.
Broadcasting License
Broadcasting, Film & Television
In most cases, no additional license is required to use our fonts in video content. If the font has been used in a desktop application to render text and the output is a standard video file—with the letterforms baked into the image—this is considered an extension of normal desktop use and is covered by the Desktop License.
Film & television titles
Where a font is used as part of a live broadcast pipeline—for example, as dynamic on-screen text in film or television title sequences, credits, or lower-thirds—a dedicated Broadcasting License is required. Pricing is negotiated individually based on the scope of the production. Please contact us with details: [email protected]
Social media
Where the font is used as part of a broader brand identity that publishes graphics or video featuring the typeface on social media platforms, a Social Media License is also required.
All other terms are set out in the General Terms.
OEM License
Manufacturing & Products
Allows pre-installed fonts to be delivered together with the manufacturer’s hardware equipment or software (such as printers, video games, etc). Licensee shall not allow users to extract the fonts from the equipment or use them for any other purpose. Cost varies depending on the number of fonts used and number of produced units. Please provide specific information about your product (including selling price) and the number of produced units for a price quote.
ePub License
Electronic Publications
An ePub License is required to embed the font software in any distributed electronic publication. Supported publication types include eBooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers, interactive PDFs, and similar formats distributed via e-reading platforms or direct download.
License Scope
One license covers one publication title. Each distinct title requires a separate license. Individual issues of a recurring publication (e.g. monthly magazine editions) each count as a separate title. Regional or format variations of the same title (e.g. EPUB and Kindle versions of the same book) do not count as separate titles. Updated versions of a publication provided free of charge to existing readers do not require a new license; paid new editions do.
Embedding Requirements
The font software must be embedded within a file format that obscures the font data using compression, encryption, or obfuscation. Accepted formats include EPUB 2, EPUB 3, PDF, KF8/Kindle, and Apple Books. The font must be subset to the characters used in the publication and may not be installed on the operating system of the reading device. End users must not be able to extract or use the font software outside of the publication.
Cover artwork
Use of the font in static cover artwork (e.g. a rasterised or outlined image) is covered by a standard Desktop License and does not require a separate ePub License.
Restrictions
The font may be used for display and reading of existing content only. It may not be used to generate new content dynamically, create templates, or enable end users to edit or produce new documents. Unless you obtain additional licensing, this license does not cover: use on a website (see Web License); embedding in an application (see Mobile/Apps License); or use in broadcasting, video, or film (see Broadcasting License).
All other terms are set out in the General Terms.
General Terms
These General Terms apply to all AlfaType license agreements. By purchasing any AlfaType license you agree to be bound by these terms in addition to the terms of the specific EULA applicable to your license type.
Font Software
The term “font software” refers to the computer program which contains digitally encoded scaleable outline font data and includes any related documentation, updates, permitted modifications, and permitted copies licensed to you by AlfaType. You agree that AlfaType and/or its suppliers own all rights to the font software and its structure, selection, organisation, and code, including copyrights, patents, design and trademark rights. The font software is protected by International Copyright Laws. AlfaType and the AlfaType logo are registered trademarks.
Modifications
You agree that you will not modify, add new functionalities, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, decrypt, disassemble, or create derivative works of the font software without AlfaType’s prior written consent. “Derivative work” refers to any font software which is derived or based upon the licensed font software binary data or any portion of it.
Entire Agreement
This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to its subject matter and supersedes all prior written and oral agreements. No waiver or modification will be binding unless made in writing and signed by a duly authorised representative of each party. No failure or delay in enforcing any right will be deemed a waiver.
Severability
If any provision of this Agreement is found to be illegal or unenforceable, the other provisions shall remain effective and enforceable to the greatest extent permitted by law.
Assignability
Except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, you may not sell, assign, or delegate any rights or obligations under this Agreement. Any attempted assignment in violation of this Agreement shall be void and without effect.
Third Parties
You agree to inform your employees and any other person having access to the font software of the terms and conditions of this Agreement, and to ensure they strictly abide by them.
Termination
This license shall automatically terminate if you fail to comply with its terms and conditions. Upon termination you agree to return or destroy the font software, all copies, and any modified or merged portions thereof, and to refrain from further use.
Limited Warranty
For a period of 90 days after delivery, AlfaType warrants that the font software will perform as outlined in the documentation in effect at the time of the commencement of this license. AlfaType will undertake reasonable commercial efforts to correct substantial and reproducible malfunctions reported in writing during this period. ALFATYPE’S SOLE LIABILITY AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WITH RESPECT TO BREACH OF THE FOREGOING LIMITED WARRANTY WILL BE LIMITED TO ERROR CORRECTION OR PRODUCT REPLACEMENT.
EXCEPT FOR THE ABOVE EXPRESS LIMITED WARRANTY, THE FONT SOFTWARE IS LICENSED “AS IS”, AND ALFATYPE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.
The font software is nonreturnable and nonrefundable.
Limitation of Liability
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THIS AGREEMENT OR THE USE OF THE FONT SOFTWARE, HOWEVER CAUSED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA, OR COSTS OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES, EVEN IF NOTIFIED IN ADVANCE. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ALFATYPE’S LIABILITY EXCEED THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THE FONT SOFTWARE.
Governing Law
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Italy. All disputes shall be heard in the Courts of Italy. Both you and AlfaType agree to the personal jurisdiction and venue of these courts. This Agreement will not be governed by the conflict of law rules of any jurisdiction or by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.
Breach of Agreement
In the event of any breach of this Agreement by you, you agree to be responsible for the reasonable legal fees of AlfaType and its licensors if AlfaType is required to enforce its rights by commencing legal action.
Changes to Terms
AlfaType reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to change, modify, add, or remove portions of these terms at any time. It is your responsibility to check these terms periodically. Your continued use of the font software following any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
